Reading is one of the most rewarding and simple pastimes imaginable, a moment of pure relaxation that requires a comfortable and well-organized space. Creating a cozy reading nook at home is essential to fully immerse yourself in the pages of a book and relax.

Today I'll give you a few tips for creating one at home, from choosing the most comfortable chair to cushions, not forgetting lights and a small table, useful for resting a cup of tea or glass of water while you read.

Designing a reading corner in the living room

During the winter, I like to read in an armchair or on the sofa, creating a comfortable, warm and cozy corner. I chose a wide armchair with arms, ideal for sitting for long periods of time and changing positions, upholstered in rust-colored silk velvet, which was my grandmother's and is perfect for my relaxing moments.

To further enhance the experience, I added a few essentials. A footrest is essential to stretch your legs and relax completely. The cushions are equally important: I prefer those made of goose down, which offer ergonomic support and conform to the body. I then placed the armchair near a south-facing window to make the most of natural light. Next to the armchair, a small table always houses a cup of tea or coffee and a scented candle to create a relaxed atmosphere.

Lighting is also key here: a side table lamp or floor lamp with a directional beam is ideal. Lamps with adjustable light allow you to adjust the light intensity depending on the time of day and mood.

A soft rug underfoot and a few velvet pillows complete the reading corner, making it even more cozy and sophisticated. Don't forget to add a soft blanket, perfect for wrapping yourself up on cooler evenings.

How to create a reading nook in the garden

If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, take advantage of it to create an outdoor reading nook, the perfect retreat on spring and summer days. Choose a quiet, shady area, possibly near aromatic plants such as lavender or rosemary, whose scent will enrich the reading experience. Opt for a comfortable outdoor sofa or rattan armchair, equipped with weather-resistant cushions. A low coffee table will be useful for resting books and drinks.

Even in the garden, light is important: a solar lamp or string lights can create a magical atmosphere at sunset. Add a light blanket for cooler evenings, and if space permits, a hammock could be a nice addition. Finally, a selection of potted plants will help create a relaxing and rejuvenating environment.

Reading in the bedroom: some tips for being comfortable

Reading is one of the most rewarding pastimes, a moment of pure relaxation that requires a comfortable and well-organized space. Creating a cozy reading nook in the bedroom is essential for fully immersing oneself in the pages of a book.

Often, the bed is not the ideal place to read, especially with only one pillow, which can be uncomfortable. Adding pillows of different sizes and textures will greatly enhance the reading experience. Personally, I prefer down pillows, which conform to the body and offer ergonomic support. I use a large 65x65 cm pillow behind my back and smaller ones for my head and arms. In addition, a 30x60 cm long pillow placed under the neck is perfect for maximum comfort.

When I go to sleep, I store the extra pillows in a soft basket near the bed, keeping them clean and tidy. I recommend choosing removable pillowcases in washable fabrics, such as linen, which is breathable and soft. This fabric not only complements the aesthetics of the sheets but also provides a touch of elegance.

For those who also like to read in bed during the day, having a plaid on hand is essential. In summer, replace the wool plaid with a lightweight linen bedspread.

Light is another crucial element. If possible, take advantage of natural light from a window. Alternatively, a good directional lamp with pinpoint light is essential so as not to strain the eyes. Avoid ceiling lights, opting instead for wall sconces or bedside lamps with extendable arms.

Finally, considering the position of the bed in relation to the natural light source can make a big difference. If possible, position the bed so that natural light comes from behind or to the side, avoiding direct glare. Creating an uncluttered and harmonious environment will help make reading an even more enjoyable and relaxing time.
