Finally the use of duvets   and duvet covers is becoming more and more widespread in Italy, after several years in which, to my surprise, it was not so used. In my family, in fact,  the duvet has replaced winter blankets since I was a child and for this reason I have always taken it for granted that everyone knows the advantages of this set-up for the winter bed. Over the years I have done my best to make it known and used more and more, given its comfort and practicality and, talking to many customers, I am often asked if the duvet cover is more comfortable than the classic sheet accompanied by layers of blankets more or less heavy.

What is a down jacket and which one to choose?

First of all, let's clarify what I'm talking about, I'm referring to  a duvet  that can be made  of goose down  or synthetic fiber  such as dacron, and that is covered with a lining of different types of fabric, silk, linen in our case or cotton. When I talk about duvet cover I mean the fabric bag that covers the entire duvet, top and bottom and there are various sizes, from the double duvet cover to the single one, passing through square and a half and king size. And here is the first doubt that we dispel: with the duvet cover it is not necessary to use another sheet, in addition to the one that covers the mattress, in fact it is enough to use a sheet with corners and a pillowcase for the pillow.

The duvet cover has always been very popular in all northern European countries, such as France, Germany and Scandinavia, which has finally found its place in Italian bedrooms, making it a valid alternative to the layers of blankets we use during the winter.

Duvet covers: how to choose it and put the duvet in the bag?

The ability  to make the best use of the duvet cover starts with the choice: duvet covers have  different sizes, linked to  the size of the bed and duvet. For this reason, consider choosing the most suitable size right from the time of purchase, keep in mind that the standard ones  for the double bed  are 250×200 cm, while for the single duvet cover we will go for the 155×220 cm size. If you have a queen-size bed  , you can opt for the 200×220 cm size.

Many people get scared because they think  it's complicated to put  the duvet in the duvet cover but once you've done the workout it's not difficult at all: everyone has their own method but, if you need a suggestion, the one I prefer is this one.

  • Turn  the duvet cover inside out and place it on the short side, so you can easily reach the top corners.
  • Put  your hands in the duvet cover, grasping the corners at the top and, with the duvet cover fitted like a glove, grab the corresponding corners of the duvet: at this point slide the fabric , letting it cover the entire length of the duvet.
  • Finally, close  the buttons or laces at the bottom of the lining, in order to give it a neat look.

Now that we know more, I confess that for me there is no comparison, so I decided to give you all the reasons why you prefer the duvet to the blanket and why I recommend it with so much enthusiasm.

The duvet cover is lighter than a blanket for the same warmth offered

The first reason for choosing to sleep under a duvet instead of under the covers is the difference in weight. A duvet is very light, its weight ranges from 180 g/m² to 270 g/m² for a winter goose down duvet, while for synthetic duvets we have a greater weight, from 200 g/m² for a summer down and 300 to 450 g/m² for the winter version.

The pressure on our body is barely noticeable, while blankets are often heavy, can make us feel a little plastered and do not allow us to move freely in sleep.

Making the bed with the duvet cover is quick and convenient

The second advantage of a duvet is that using a single layer, making the bed is simple, just a gesture. In fact, you don't have to pull all  the layers of sheets  and blankets, flap the sheet and finally tuck everything in, instead a movement is enough to arrange the duvet in its position and give it the neat appearance of a cloud on our bed. What a discovery when as a little girl my mother adopted duvets for our beds: how much easier it was for us little ones to keep the room tidy and make that blessed bed that before was always a little crooked! That's why you can easily use it to get children used to making their own bed.

A duvet cover takes up little space in the closet and you can change the color of the bed even every week.

The third reason to choose the down jacket is the possibility of changing the style whenever we want. In fact, the duvet never changes but the duvet covers can all be different from each other, giving us the opportunity to give a new look to our bed whenever we want. So every week you can decide to see your bed all white or pink or even blue: the size of a duvet cover in the wardrobe is the same as that of a sheet and so I can indulge myself in a thousand different versions, which I could not have done blankets and bedspreads. It would have taken 4 four-season wardrobes to hold all the blankets of the colors I can give to my bed with duvet covers. Even when it comes to cost, there is no comparison, a duvet cover costs much less than a bedspread or a nice blanket!

The duvet cover can be washed at home, saving on laundry.

The fourth reason to choose a duvet cover is hygiene: it is removable and can be washed in the washing machine, like a sheet, every week, something that cannot be done with heavy wool blankets or elaborate bedspreads in upholstery fabrics! In fact, blankets almost always have to be taken to the laundry for professional washing, with a consequent high economic cost and waste of time.

With a washing machine  you wash the whole set of the bed, including pillowcases and sheets from underneath and if the weather is bad you can tumble dry and the beds in the day are already made, clean and scented! From the point of view of healthiness and allergies, the duvet cover  is the ideal solution since the materials with which a duvet is made are generally more breathable and hypoallergenic. Traditional blankets can accumulate more allergens, they tend to accumulate allergens, which can cause respiratory problems.

The bed made with the duvet cover is tidier and more beautiful

The fifth reason to prefer the duvet cover is a little more subjective but in my opinion, from a purely aesthetic point of view,  a bed made with a nice puffy duvet is a thousand times more beautiful than a flat bed made with blankets. Obviously, if you know me a little bit you know that I equip my bed with no less than 6/8 pillows of different sizes and colors, with a princely result!

Duvet saves on heating

The sixth reason is very practical: with a duvet you are guaranteed warmth and for this reason it will help you save on heating, sleep healthier and pollute less. If you are worried that the temperature is too high, consider that there are different heaviness so choose the one that best suits your degree of cold and the season. Let's also consider that thanks to the duvet we can lower the temperature of the house by several degrees at night, with the result that the air will be fresher and healthier, you will spend much less on heating and you will also do our planet and the environment a favor. I hope I have convinced you, also because after years, I know that every time I list my good  reasons to use the down jacket and conquer someone, I then receive  enthusiastic comments and not infrequently other excellent reasons that are added to mine!

So let's summarize the good reasons for it for a moment

  • The duvet cover is lighter than  a blanket for the same warmth offered;
  • The bed is easier to make, so I encourage even the youngest children to make their own bed;
  • A duvet cover takes up very little space in the closet;

  • You can wash the duvet cover in the washing machine, saving you the trouble of taking it to the laundry;
